2021 Everest climbing new rules

Nepal- The Department of Tourism has started issuing permits for mountaineering expedition permits for the spring season with certain restrictions.

According to the ministry, mountaineers – regardless of nationality – will only allow taking photos and videos related to their expedition activities. Taking photos or videos for commercial purposes, including promotional videos, is not allowed. Permission from the ministry will be required for taking photos and videos for such purposes, said Mira Acharya, director of the mountaineering division of the DoT.

Online briefing became mandatory while applying for the expedition permit. The DoT has said that agencies conducting expeditions will have to fill the online briefing form.

According to the ministry, agencies will have to submit all related documents and the expedition plan during the debriefing process.
Earlier, the plan had to be submitted only on receipt of the expedition permit. Acharya said the ministry has asked helicopter operators and agencies to take climbers only to fully equipped hospitals after their rescue.

The government, however, has not relaxed the rules for the arrival of tourists.

Tourists will have to stay in quarantine for five days mandatorily. With expedition activities halted due to the COVID -19 pandemic last year, the ministry and tourism operators expect an increase in the number of climbers for the spring season this year.

But tourism stakeholders said the complex health security protocols could deter tourists from visiting Nepal.
